Dear Hills Garrison Families,

WELCOME to the 2018-19 school year at Hills Garrison School. We hope all of you have enjoyed a safe and relaxing summer and are getting ready to begin the school year. We love the excitement of beginning each new school year, and all the opportunities it holds.
1.  Meet and Greet
“Meet and Greet Your Teacher” will be held on Monday, August 27th from 12:00-2:00PM. This is an opportunity for students and parents to stop by the school to meet the teachers, tour the building, and get a sense of your child’s surroundings.

2. Arrival and dismissal
Students can arrive beginning at 8:20. Please do not drop children off any earlier.  Teachers begin duty at 8:20. Students enter the building upon arrival.  The school day begins at 8:45 AM.  By that time, students should be seated in their classrooms.  The school day ends at 3:05.  Parents who are picking up their children come into the office for a pass then line up at the parent pick up area directly across from the gym.  Students will be called to parent pick up before we begin calling busses.  Students who attend the after-school program will be called to the cafeteria at dismissal.  Walkers are dismissed through the bus dismissal doors before we call busses as well.  If you are picking up your child, please do not linger as we want cars to get through before busses start out.  There is a district policy for Attendance, Tardiness, and Truancy, which is included in the Parent/Student Handbook which is available online.  Please establish the habit of being on time for school.

3. Busses:
Bus schedules and routes are posted on the district website and will also be posted on the lobby windows of the school.

4. Parent contact information:
Please be sure we have your up-to-date phone numbers and email addresses on file at all times. Make sure that you indicate emergency contact information for your child.

5. Reporting absence:
We have a school CALL-IN PROGRAM in effect. The Hudson School District asks that if your child is absent or tardy, parents call the school and inform us. You may call the night before or the morning of the absence. Our automated telephone system directs you to our absentee line (881-3930 x1). Doctor notes are required for excused/documented leave.

6. Supplies:
We provide school supplies for all students for their daily classroom use. Please feel free to supplement through the school year, especially with pencils.  If your child likes a special type of pencil or pen or other supply that works well for them, certainly feel free to send those with your child. Children will find it helpful if you set up a work area at home with pencils, crayons, markers and such to help with homework and projects. A backpack or school bag is necessary for carrying things to and from school. Please make sure to put your child’s name in all backpacks, lunchboxes and outer clothing.  Throughout the year, countless items end up in our lost and found area located in the cafeteria.

7. Headphones:
As most of our formative and state testing is now through adaptive, computerized assessments, students are required to have headphones to accomplish these requirements. The Hudson School District provides adequate headphones for students. However, if you would rather your child bring in their own headphones, teachers will gladly allow them to do so. These headphones will remain the child’s responsibility.  We will issue children a single set of headphones for their individual use.  If lost or damaged, it is the responsibility of the student/family to replace them.

8. Snack:
Every class sets aside a time for snack during the day. This is a very important part of your child’s day. It is a time to replenish their energy by eating/drinking the things you have packed. Please be sure your child has a healthy snack daily. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle each day to keep hydrated. It is helpful to label the water bottle with your child’s name.

The school nurse can only administer medications when a prescription from a doctor directs her to do so. Please keep this in mind when you bring a prescription item to school. All medicine (in its original container) must be brought in by an adult and logged in by the nurse or other school official. NO medicine may be transported by a student.
NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION: Over-the-counter medications require that parents fill out a medication permission form available from the school nurse. All medications (in original container) are kept in the nurse’s office.

On the first day of school, each child will bring home a “Home/School Communication” folder of information and important forms to be filled out. This folder will be used to go between school and home daily, so please send it back each day with your child. Your help and cooperation with these items will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at any time at 881-3930.

11. New telephone system: If you have been part of the Hills Garrison School community in past years, you are accustomed to hearing one of our secretaries answer the phone in person.  A new phone system implemented this summer greets you with a recording and directs you to various extensions.  “0” will take you to the main office.
At school, we are busy getting final projects completed for the upcoming school year.  We welcome several new staff members to Hills Garrison, and we hope you will take a moment to meet teachers on August 27
th.  We’re all excited about the school year and look forward to welcoming students and families very soon!
