Dear HGS Families,

We truly have had a strong start to this school year! In just over two weeks, students and staff have adjusted seamlessly to new routines, procedures, and protocols. We are grateful for your flexibility in adapting to new routines for drop-off and pick-up, as well as for carefully following the safety guidelines in place as part of our reopening plans. Your diligence in monitoring children each morning and ensuring that they come to school healthy and ready to learn with appropriate masks is critical in keeping us all here for learning. Thank you!

It has been so great to visit classrooms and learning spaces over these past weeks - it is wonderful to see children engaged in classroom learning activities such as writing, reading, and participating in morning meeting to build classroom community. PE and Library classes have been busy outside in the field and around the school grounds, and all classes have taken advantage of the beautiful fall weather. There are great things going on at HGS!

Here are some important items to note as we move forward:
➢ Birthday Celebrations - Birthdays are special, and we recognize that parents often want to send something in to help recognize their child’s birthday. This year, we would encourage non-edible treats, or if you send in edible items, please make sure that they are store bought/individually wrapped items. Teachers will pass out to the class. Students will not be able to pass items out around the school this year.
➢ STAR Testing - all classes, both in-person and remote, will take the STAR assessment in reading and math. This tool gives teachers important information regarding where students are academically and informs instruction as they plan to move forward.
➢ NH SAS Interim Assessments - students in grades 4 and 5 will take the reading and math interim assessments in their classrooms. Because this assessment did not take place in the Spring, students will be assessed on skills from the prior year. As with STAR, this is a helpful tool for teachers to use to plan instruction and interventions. Each test is approximately 30 questions and should take about an hour. These will be scheduled into the normal flow of classroom learning.
➢ Curriculum Night: October 1 from 6 PM - 8 PM - We will be holding this informational night virtually this year. Teachers will offer two sessions at 6 PM and 7 PM so that you can choose which one you attend. They will share links closer to the date. During these sessions, teachers will provide an overview of the year, their classroom expectations, and more. This is a time for general information. Should you have specific questions pertaining to your child, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Specialists, Case Managers, and other staff members will also provide information about their classrooms as well as time for Q&A.

General Reminders:
➢ As the weather gets chilly, we will continue to utilize outdoor learning spaces and maximize fresh air circulation. Please have your child dress accordingly - layers tend to work well as temperatures fluctuate.
➢ Refillable water bottles help with hydration & are good for the Earth! We have water bottle filling stations located throughout the school to meet hydration needs.
➢ Label belongings - we are trying to minimize items in lost and found this year. Please be sure to label all items, especially lunch boxes, sweatshirts and jackets, and water bottles.
➢ Changes in dismissal - all requests to change dismissal plans should be made in writing when possible. Last minute changes need to be called in to the main office, preferably before 2:00. Thank you for your cooperation.

In good citizenship this month, we are focused on learning about RESPONSIBILITY. Classroom lessons and daily quotes are designed to help students understand how personal responsibility can help them to succeed not only in school, but in all areas of their lives.

We value our partnership with each of you as we work together to provide the very best educational experiences for your children. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. We are off to a strong start, and we are stronger together!

Until next time,

Sarah Muncey, Interim Principal
