Dear Parent/Guardian,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that your student in grade 3, 4 or 5 will be participating in the New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System (NH SAS) during May.  Students in grades 3 and 4 will take assessments in English Language Arts/Reading, ELA/Writing, and Mathematics.  Students in grade 5 will take the same assessments and science as well.

These assessments are required by Federal law under Every Student Succeeds Act.  A set of high-quality academic assessments in Math and reading/language arts is required at least once a year in grades 3 through 8 with the addition of a science assessment included in grade 5.

State assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program.  They provide key information regarding student mastery of content and skills.  They can also help school districts track student growth.  This can help inform teacher instruction in the classroom.  Along with daily student work on classroom assignments, projects, writing pieces, and informal assessments, State assessment results give teachers important information about student progress compared with students across the state.  A Statewide Assessment Parent Exemption Form can be found on the district website under the Parent section.  For those who chose, this form should be returned to school no later than May 3.

All assessments will be administered in the morning between 9-11AM.  Make ups will be given in the afternoon.  Specific assessment dates at Hills Garrison School are as follows:
