Dear HGS Families & Friends,

Happy New Year! Not only do we celebrate a new year, we are at the beginning of a new decade - and for most of our students, a decade is a very, very long time! It feels big and important to enter the ‘20’s, and we feel their excitement and enthusiasm for all the potential and growth this new year brings. Many classrooms have adapted the traditional idea of setting a resolution and turned it into an opportunity for students to set new goals for themselves for the remainder of the school year.

The practice of goal setting also ties nicely into our word of the month, PERSEVERANCE, as we reflect on our progress and look at ways we can stick with it and improve. As with all of our words of the month, we hope to educate and inspire students on these important traits through daily quotes and classroom lessons.

After the excitement of December, January reminds us of the power of daily routine and all that we can accomplish with consistent application and effort (aka perseverance). Things to note for January include:
★ STAR testing between January 6th - 17th
★ January 8th at 6:30 PM - PTO meeting
★ January 9th at HMS from 6-7:30 PM Band instrument rental night for potential fifth grade band students
★ January 16th - School-wide assembly: Amazing Hero Art with Rob Surette. We look forward to an inspirational and awe-inspiring show! For more information, visit Rob’s page at http://www.amazingheroart.com/
★ January 17th - Early Release (dismissal begins at 12:30 PM)
★ January 20th - NO SCHOOL - Martin Luther King Jr. Day
★ Week of January 27th - 31st - STEM Science with Mr. Griffus

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an important part of our month here at HGS. Classroom lessons, readings, and discussions integrate many lessons we can learn from this brave man’s example. Dr. King is also one of the “everyday heroes” honored as part of the Amazing Hero Art assembly for his selfless dedication to serving others and finding ways to bring people together. There is much we can learn from his example!

We look forward to all of the opportunities for growth this new month...and new year...bring! Thank you for continuing to work together to ensure the very best educational journey possible for each student!

Until Next Time,

Lois Connors, Principal Sarah Muncey, Assistant Principal
