Hello October

Hello October
Hello OctoberDear Hills Garrison Family,

How is it possible that we find ourselves in October already? Now that we are “in the swing of things” here, the last days of August and all of September seem to have slipped by. School and classroom routines and procedures are in place and helping to ensure that things run smoothly in all aspects of our school day. Some highlights from the first month of school include:

★ The Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by our PTO. It is clear from the strong sales that reading and books are an important part of our lives!;
★ The Genevieve’s Gift Wrap fundraiser which helps subsidize the cost of field trips for all grade levels;
★ A well-attended Curriculum Night where teachers shared lots of valuable information with parents and families;
★ Picture Day, complete with hair bows, haircuts, neckties, and smiles;

and so much more! We are grateful to each of you for your dedication and commitment to being a part of your child’s educational journey here at HGS. Our school community wouldn’t be the same without each of you.

There are many exciting things to look forward to this month, including:
★ Teacher workshop day is Friday, October 5th, so there is no school for students.
★ There is also no school on Monday, October 8th, in recognition of Columbus Day.
★ Make a Difference Food Drive runs from October 15-19. We are collecting non-perishable food items for the local food pantry. Please refer to the notice sent home regarding this terrific opportunity to help others in our community. All items collected will be donated to St. John’s food pantry.
★ Ilze Luneau Assembly on Friday, October 26th. This fast-paced basketball themed assembly emphasizes the importance of working hard, setting goals, never giving up, and spreading kindness. We will have two showings with Ilze so that all students have the opportunity to be dazzled by her skills and to hear her important message. A great big thank you goes to the PTO for sponsoring this event!
★ We will have our Parade of the Horribles (Adorables) and classroom parties on Wednesday, October 31st at 1:30. Parents are welcome to come. More information to follow.

Other Notes:

In keeping with district goals of ensuring that all students, staff, volunteers, and community members are safe in our buildings, we have made, and continue to make, many upgrades to infrastructure and technology. Bollards have been installed at any entrances with a cut out in the curb. We have added a layer of safety at our main entrance with the new “double buzz” entrance, which includes a buzzer and camera feed. Soon-to-be installed cameras will provide a full view of the exterior of the building as well as entrances. We are confident that these improvements make our campuses more safe and secure.

Another key part of our Emergency Operations Plan is the implementation of regularly scheduled safety drills, including fire and ALICE drills. Our first ALICE drill is scheduled for October 19th. As with all drills, the purpose is to highlight what we are doing well and to determine areas we need to learn from and hone for the future.

The district is also proud to partner with the YMCA this year at the elementary schools to provide achievement coaches. Mr. Clark Plummer has been visiting students in class, in the lunchroom, and at recess. In addition to providing mini-lessons in all classrooms that focus on community building, interpersonal skills, and goal setting, Mr. Plummer also works with students during less structured times, such as lunch and recess, to build skills associated with self-regulation, problem solving, and conflict resolution. Each month, we focus on one particular theme with regard to character development. In September, we emphasized kindness, and for the month of October, our focus is on Responsibility.

As the days grow shorter and the leaves signal the passing of time, we wish each of you time to spend with your families, time to snuggle up with a good book, and time to appreciate the natural beauty around us. Thank you for being a part of our school community!

Warm Regards,

Lois Connors, Principal Sarah Muncey, Assistant Principal
