Welcome October –

I am so excited for some cooler weather! Fall is my favorite time of the year; I love the crisp air and the leaves changing color! The word of the month for October is RESPECT. We will discuss this topic and read some books in this area as well.

We have been working hard over the past month getting to know each other! Things have settled down a bit and we are getting back into the school routine. The students recently took the STAR reading and math computer assessments, these assessments give me some insight as to the skills we need to work on over the next few months. As I work on new goals for each student these assessments will help me tailor each students’ goals to their specific needs.  We have also completed the Fountas & Pinnell instructional reading benchmarks. Each student has been given a level letter that helps them pick out “just right” books for them to read.

In Math this month we are concentrating on working on fluency with math facts – addition, subtraction. Practicing these facts at home will help them succeed! If you would like some flash cards to work on at home, please let me know and I can send some home with your child.

In Reading we are all working on understanding GENRE. The first thing we do is look at the cover of a book to predict the genre: fiction or non-fiction, and why we make the prediction. We are also working on understanding what story elements are: the characters, setting, problem, solution, and theme of a story. As we read our books this month we will ask ourselves these questions ~ who are the characters?, where does the story take place?, does anything go wrong in this story?, and how did they solve the problem?, what is the message or moral of the story?. I have added a picture (in the photo area of the web site) of an anchor chart we use during class to help us with the story elements.

We will also be practicing our DOLCH words, please see pictures in the photo area of the web site to see some games to play to practice these words. There is also a document under the “HELPFUL information and useful links” tab that can explain why these words are so important to learn.

While working in our room together we are using I CAN statements. These will be listed on the white board and will state the topic we will be working towards. For example: I CAN state the genre of a book, or I CAN repeat a pattern. We will have one statement for a math goal and one for a reading goal. Ask your kids what their I CAN statement is during the week. 😊

This year is a bit different, so I am not sure how we are going to be doing any Halloween parties or if we are having the Parade of the Adorable. Keep an eye out for notes or emails that will go home that will have more information as it gets closer.
