HGS "Battle of the Books"

4th and 5th graders had a great time participating in the “Battle of the Books” competition.
The teams were coached by Mary Levesque and Sue Senecal.

The Zoo Show

The 2nd grade participated in a P.T.O. sponsored assembly “The Zoo Show”.  The children met Mr. Larry and Mrs. Lee who have an animal farm in Dudley, MA.  As each animal, bird or reptile was shown, information was shared about the species adaptation, diet, habitat, defense mechanisms and pertinent characteristics.  The children met and learned about the following:

·         Sulcatta Tortoise (Sherman)

·         Burmese Python (Baby)

·         Boa Constrictor (Slider)

·         Coatia South American Raccoon ( Big Bear)

·         Serval (Luca)

·         Llama (Scooter)

·         Squirrel Monkey (Chipmunk)

·         Green- Winged Macau (Cracker)

"We Have a Singing Valentine"

“WE HAVE A SINGING VALENTINE!”

The students of Mrs. Leslie Liakos – Room 201 shared “Singing Valentines” sent by staff members to others throughout the building.  All proceeds from this activity are donated to the Hudson Special Olympics team.

Everyone enjoyed the delightful verses and tunes sung by the spirited singers, who dressed for the occasion.  Thank you for warming the hearts of everyone.

CELEBRATE READING AT HILLS GARRISON

Celebrate Reading!

HATS ON FOR HAITI

HGS HATS ON FOR HAITI DAY

One of the things we are proudest of in our school is the generosity and spirit of helpfulness that our school community shows to help others in need.  Several students asked if we could do something to help the earthquake victims in Haiti.  The widespread devastation experienced by thousands of people in that area requires world wide support.

On Friday, January 29, 2010 we held a HATS ON FOR HAITI DAY” children, staff and volunteers were asked to donate $1.00 to be able to wear a favorite hat in school for the day.  Participants wore a hat for their favorite team, school cap, or a crazy creation of their own.  By doing so, our school community took part in helping.

We raised a total of $1,155.50.  All contributions will be donated to the American Red Cross Fund for Haiti Relief.

As always, thank you to all participants for your generous spirit of giving.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Registration for 2010-2011

KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE REGISTRATION

Hudson Elementary Schools

2010-2011

Parents of children who will be entering kindergarten or first grade in the Hudson School District in September 2010 are invited to visit the district website at www.sau81.org for registration (see the left side of the page).  Students currently enrolled in the Hudson School District kindergarten program do not need to register.

Parents can begin the registration process at home prior to attending in-person registration.  If you have already opened a “family account” online, you need to “add a child”.  Your completed paperwork will be waiting for you when you come to registration.  Computers will also be available at in-person registration.

In-person registration will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on February 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

To be eligible for kindergarten in September 2010, a child must attain his/her fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2010.  For first grade, children must be six years old by September 30, 2010.  A birth certificate must be provided to register for school.  Proof of residence (current property tax bill, utility bill, rent receipt, etc.) is also required. Please note that a driver’s license is not an acceptable proof of residence.  Parents must register their children in the attendance zone in which they reside.

Each child is required to meet specific medical standards before entering first grade, including a current physical examination and up-to-date immunizations.  Parents should bring their child’s current immunization record to the registration.

We encourage all parents to register their students during the registration period, even if they are considering another school placement for kindergarten.

If parents have any questions about kindergarten or first grade, they may contact the Guidance Department at the school in their attendance zone (Hills Garrison Elementary School – 881-3930; Library Street Elementary School – 886-1255; Nottingham West Elementary School – 595-1570).

NOTE:  A Few New Year’s Resolutions/Notes

·         Be on time for school every day.  School starts promptly at 8:45 a.m. and students need to be in their classroom by that time.

·         When dropping students off in the morning, please be careful.  Quickly unload at the curb and proceed with caution.   Be careful not to pass other cars unloading, sometimes children exit from both sides of the car.  DO NOT park and get out of the vehicle and leave your car in the fire lane.  If you are coming into the building you must park in the parking lot before coming into the building.  DO NOT pull into the parking lot and let students cross the driveway on their own to shortcut the drop off line.  It is very unsafe.

·         NOTE:  DO NOT DROP CHILDREN IN GRADES 1-5 OFF BEFORE 8:20 A.M.  DUTY COVERAGE BEGINS AT 8:20 A.M. OTHERWISE CHILDREN ARE UNATTENDED/UNSUPERVISED.  DO NOT DROP KINDERGARTENERS OFF BEFORE 8:30 OR 12:30 SINCE THE KINDERGARTEN STAFF BEGINS COVERAGE FOR THEIR STUDENTS AT THOSE TIMES.

·         Dress for the weather!  The weather in New England is very unpredictable and we go out for recess as often as we can.  20° F and up, recess takes place.  Fun and fresh air are very important midday.  Also, students with boots and snow pants can play in the large field of snow.

·         Please make sure your child has a book to read in their backpack at all times.

·         Please call the school if your child is going to be absent or late 881-3930.

·         If you have any changes to your emergency contact information – phone numbers (home/work), address, contact people, etc.  Please notify the office/teacher.  It is important for us to have current information in the event we need to reach you.

Important Notes

                                                           Hills Garrison 2009-2010

A few necessary notes:

  • TRAFFIC FLOW:  The right side parking lot is for staff parking.  Visitors should enter from Route 102 and cautiously bear left, then proceed straight and turn into the drive or parking lot in front of the building.  The front driveway is for quick student drop-off; please pull to the end of the benches in an effort to keep things moving.  If you are going to get out of your vehicle, you must use the front visitor parking lot.  No vehicles may stop and block the driveway.  It is a fire lane.  Please note the driveway going around the building is only for buses, service and emergency vehicles.  Cars must yield for school buses.
  • STUDENT ARRIVAL FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 1 - 5:  Duty teachers begin to supervise at 8:20 A.M.  The student day starts at 8:45 A.M. and being on time is a good habit to establish.  As the fall months approach, be mindful of the weather.  Young children appreciate having a jacket, sweatshirt, hat, mittens, etc. when unexpected changes occur in the weather.

STUDENT ARRIVAL FOR STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN – A.M.:  Kindergarten staff will be in the front lobby (8:30 – 8:45 A.M.) to greet and gather the children dropped off by parents, vans and school buses.

STUDENT ARRIVAL FOR STUDENTS IN KINDERGARTEN – P.M.:

Kindergarten staff will be in the front lobby (12:30 – 12:45 P.M.) to greet and gather the children dropped off by parents, vans and school buses.

  • CALL-IN PROGRAM:  We have a school CALL-IN PROGRAM in effect at Hills Garrison School. If your child is going to be absent, you are responsible for calling the school by 8:30 A.M.  If we do not hear from you, we will try to make calls to your home and/or work to verify the absence.  We know that you will agree with us that this procedure is in the BEST INTEREST and SAFETY of your child.  Please call the school at 881-3930 to report your daughter/son’s absence.
  • SNACK TIME:  Every class sets aside a SNACK TIME during the day.  This is a very important part of your child’s day.  It is a time to replenish their energy by eating/drinking the things you have packed.
  • MEDICATIONS:  The school nurse can only administer medications when a prescription from a doctor directs her to do so.  Please keep this is mind when you bring a prescription item to school.  All medicine must be brought in by an adult and logged in by the nurse or other school official.  NO medicine may be transported by a student.
  • NO SMOKING/TOBACCO USE:  The use of tobacco products is strictly prohibited in all school facilities, and on school grounds and vehicles on school grounds, throughout the Hudson School District.

On the first day of school, each child will bring home a “School to Home Communication” folder of information and important forms to be filled out.  This folder will be used to go between school and home, so please send it back each day with your child.  Your help and cooperation with these items will be greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school at any time at 881-3930.

Hills Garrison Playground Project

The playground project is well under way. Many thanks for everyone's hard work, commitment and support. Click on the thumbnail image to the left or click here to read more about our fundraising efforts / upcoming events, the playground design, and our committee. We will provide regular updates so you can keep tabs on our progress and to find out how you can help.

Hello,

Good News!  New playground equipment has been delivered.  The HGS playground committee has been working quite hard on this project; we’re excited with the progress that has been made.  A community build date has been scheduled for June 20th , starting around 9AM.  We’ll have plenty of work to be done even if you don’t like the manual labor.  We’ll be mixing concrete, digging holes, putting together equipment, spreading wood chips and raking.  We’ll also need help feeding our volunteers and keeping them hydrated.  I welcome anyone who can make it and be a part of this exciting day. There will be a parent volunteer sheet going home next week, for additional help.  There is a staff sign up sheet in the mail room.  I hope to see you all there!  Remember, there’s a job for everyone.

Thanks so much,

Jeremy Griffus
